Asian Secret

2nd Place in the 2006 National Orchid Society Quilting Contest

This quilt is the first one to introduce bas-relief and found objects to the mix. The hair of the geishia is raised from the surface. There are handmade silk orchids in her hair and real tassles on the ends of her chopsticks. Still pushing herself to try different techniques, Jennifer incorporated machine embroidery red-work in the quilting of this piece. Using EBM2 she digitized several of her sketches of flowers, peacocks, Asian symbols and the like and used them to quilt the 3 layers together. Stippling was used to fill in around the areas where the machine embroidery could not reach. Jennifer also digitized the orchid in the hair on the right side and the border print. In keeping with the focus of the quilt, the fan covering part of the geishias mouth, Jennifer created a border comprised of tiny fans. Fresh water pearls and colored glass beads were added as a finishing touch. The combination of the satin and taffata along with the required contest fabrics makes this quilt one that longs to be touched. It has a soft feel and with all the quilted-line work makes the back as interesting as the front.
