Like the sun god in Egyptian mythology, Benu's (Bennu) own birth is attributed to self generation. In quoting from The Book of The Dead, Wallis Budge reads a passage that says "I go in like the Hawk, and I come forth like the Bennu, the Morning Star (i.e.the planet Venus) of Ra; I am the Bennu which is in Heliopolis". This passage informs us that the Benu is the resurrected Osiris.

This is yet another instance where I thought I was making one thing and it turned into something else! It was going to be a cover for a pillow but one thing off-center here and another thing leaving a big negative space there and pretty soon I had a quilt square that measures about 2 1/2 feet by 2 1/2 feet.

I have been working on some digitized embroidery designs that I want to incorporate into an up-coming Egyptian theme quilt. I wanted to test sew my designs and I was short 1 Christmas gift so I took the opportunity to kill 2 birds with one stone. I stitched out the Bennu bird on a piece of silvery-olive silk and then added my digitized galanthus plants down each side. It seemed a little sparse so I digitized a few hieroglyphics to run across the top. This is where I ran into trouble because I had intended to have the characters centered between the plants and I was way off my mark. Not only didn't I get them centered, but when I flipped the embroidery file and started a reverse stitch-out to fill in the gap, it wasn't on the same level. So, although I had the characters centered, they now were going up hill!

I was able to rectify the problems by stitching around the hieroglyphics with some decorative stitching. I didn't try to hide the fact that they were not on the same level. I also filled in the empty space with small embroidery files of plants and insects. Many of these fill-ins I collected as free files online at various sites. Thanks to all who give samples of their work! I digitized the rippled water as an applique so I could add a different bit of shimmery satin to the bottom field. I had been practicing with my copy of Fancyworks Studio, an embroidery digitizing program, and I had created a small embroidery ornament that I realized looked like a very stylized fish when laid on its side. This came in very handy! I was able to finish this piece by quilting it together in one evening and it made for a lovely Christmas gift!
