3 Feet x 2 1/2 Feet
This photo quilt is of my late cat, Knucklehead. I made this small quilt square as a way of demonstrating how to create a quick and exciting image in applique.

I showed this at an Arlington, Virginia quilt guild trunkshow and talk in October 2007.
Knucklehead was a great cat full of quirky personality traits. He died a few years ago from heart failure after being with me for 14 years.

I wanted an image that I could quickly make into a small applique quilt. I came across this close-up picture of Knucklehead.

Photoshop Color Reduction
I reduced the colors in the picture using a graphics program with a 'bucket-fill' option. If you have Photo Shop on your computer this will work for you.
I was then able to trace the larger areas using tissue paper and create a pattern of the different shapes. For the eyes, I layered Organza, Tulle and Netting to create a more 3-dimensional look

Finished Knucklehead Photo Quilt
It took me longer to lay out this quilt than to stitch it. I kept changing my mind about the colors of cloth. Since Knucklehead was a Russian Blue cat, his coloring was really a bluish grey. But, to make the finished quilt come closest to the photo, and actually look like Knucklehead when I was done, I had to try out several different types of cloth.
I found I got distracted by some of my early choices because there was too much pattern in them. So, even though the color might have been more to my liking, I vetoed many early fabric selections.
Don't be afraid to cut a piece of cloth and lay it in place if you have to. I can tell right away when something is wrong, but it takes actually laying something down to see if it's right!
